Explore the Features of Procedural Writing

When teaching a new text type to your students, it is important to reinforce the purpose, structural elements and language features in as many different ways as possible.

This set of 5 procedural writing anchor charts has been designed by our experienced teacher team to remind you students of the key features of procedural texts. They provide a great reference point for your students to consult at any time during your procedural writing unit. The anchor charts cover the following content:

  • Anchor Chart 1 – What Is Procedural Writing?
  • Anchor Chart 2 – Procedural Text Types
  • Anchor Chart 3 – Procedural Transition Words
  • Anchor Chart 4 – Procedural Writing Checklist
  • Anchor Chart 5 – Procedural Writing Structure

This resource is available as a full-color PDF. If you have limited color printing available at your school, we recommend printing in grayscale on colored paper. You may even wish to enlarge the posters so that they really pop when placed on your classroom bulletin board!

Multiple Benefits of These Procedural Writing Anchor Charts

As mentioned above, displaying these procedural writing anchor charts in your classroom during your procedural writing unit can benefit your students’ learning in multiple ways.

  1. Concise Summary of Information—This set of 5 procedural writing anchor charts provides a concise summary of the purpose, structural elements and language features of procedural writing. It offers students a great snapshot and can help them remember the key features of the text type.
  2. Visual Reference Point—If students are writing a procedure text independently and need a reminder of what content or language to include, the anchor charts make a great source of information for them to consult to gain the clarification they need.
  3. Workbook Printables – In addition to being used for a classroom display, these anchor charts can also be used as printables for student notebooks. Simply select the anchor chart you wish to provide to the students, print copies and have the students glue these into their notebooks for future reference.
